Tom came to England in 1960 from the beautiful island in the heart of the Caribbean Antigua, where he worked on the American Naval Base.
Tom was a slaughter, butcher and spent most of his life working at Klein’s, where they butchered fresh farm livestock and collected waste oils from the catering trade and hotels from the East End to the West End of London.
It was hard and the winters were very harsh, miserable and extremely cold, but Tom persevered where so many had admitted defeat due to the cold challenging work. Tom remained there until his mid-seventies.
Anyone who knew Tom would tell you he told it as it was, not afraid to speak his mind, but was kind and had a heart of gold and would give you his last shirt on his back, if you were cold. Daddy loved to cook and would cook Sous for parties and his famous saltfish cakes, peppers and many more, too numerous to mention.
Over the years, there were many jokes, belly laughter and tears as dad’s sense of humour was hilarious. The stories and his legacy lives on in those whose hearts he touched.
Even though he is no longer here in body, his spirit continues to live on and always brings a smile and laughter to the heart. Daddy, we salute and miss you. May the late Thomas Revley Merchant continue to RIP, 8th July 1934 – 7th July 2019.
